Spickard, Lee Howard--age 90 of Knoxville, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church. He graduated from Knoxville High School and Carson Newman College. He was founder and owner of Lee Spickard Company and several Dollar Stores around East Tennessee. His favorite hobby was piloting his twin engine Piper airplane.
Lee fought in World War II as part of the 86th Blackhawk Division, 341st Infantry Regiment, Company H of the U. S, Army. The Division fought in Germany along the Rhine, the Ruhr Pocket and in Bavaria. The 86th led General Patton's 3rd Army over the Danube into Austria and the famed German Redoubt. On V-E Day, the 86th was only 23 miles from Hitler's Berchtesgaden mountain retreat. He received the Bronze Star for personal bravery in combat.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years Laura Elese Spickard who passed away March 28, 2012, and by his parents Dennis Marshall Spickard and Suzanna Lowery Spickard; brother, Jack Gleason Spickard; sister, Bobbie June Spickard Day.
Survived by daughters, Susan Spickard Allen (Larry) of Houston and Sarah Lawson (Greg) of Knoxville; grandchildren, Lindsay Sarah Allen of Houston, Casey Elese Bays of Knoxville, Matt Lawrence Allen of Houston (Ashleigh); great grandsons, Jackson Allen Neal and Logan Edward Allen; nieces and nephews; special friend, Ginny Anderson.
Family and friends will meet 12:15 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 12:30 p.m. graveside service and interment with Reverend Ron Mouser officiating. Full military honors will be provided by East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2015 at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway.
