Kenneth Kermit Kitts, 84, died Saturday, January 20, 2018, at his home in Knoxville, Tennessee. He leaves his wife, Martha Story Kitts; his daughters Dr. Susan Kitts Messer and Janet Kitts Stalling; his son, Kevin Kermit Kitts; seven grandchildren: Elizabeth Messer Pope, Rachel Allison Hale, Stuart Reed Bethel, Mary Susan Bethel, Victoria Elizabeth Bethel, Kathleen Amanda Kitts, and Emily Danielle Stalling; one great-granddaughter, Adeline Tinsley Pope; one brother Gordon Kitts (wife Ginger Ivester Kitts) and one sister-in-law, Betty Disney Kitts; three stepchildren: Mark Story, Paul Story, and Beth Story Brewer; and seven step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Buckner Kitts, his parents, his brother, Warren Hugh Kitts, his sister, Mary Francis Payne, and his stepson, Dan Story.
Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Kermit was the son of Virgil McClure Kitts and Ada Nell Beeler Kitts. He was a member of the last graduating class of Knoxville High School in 1951 and subsequently served in the US Navy during the Korean conflict. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and became a lifelong railroad man where he rose to an executive rank with CSX.
A devout Christian, Kermit was raised in the Oakwood Baptist Church and was an active member and deacon of all churches where he was a member. The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 pm Tuesday at Stevens Mortuary on Oglewood Avenue in Knoxville, Tennessee. Following the memorial service at
2:00 pm, officiated by Dr. David Lord, family and friends will process to Lynnhurst Cemetery on Adair Drive for the interment.
