Obituary

BENTLEY, JOHN WILLIAM - John, known as "RED" to his family and friends, passed away peacefully with his daughter and loved ones around him on July 12, 2013 at Tennova Residential Hospice. He was a life member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

John was born December 7, 1923 in East St. Louis, MO, and lived most of his life in the Knoxville, TN area. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jane Neal Bentley, Parents, Ed and Ellen Bentley; Siblings, Mary E. Sassi, James E. Bentley, Sr. , Frances C. Cloud, and Thomas J. Bentley. He is survived by his loving daughter, Mary Ann Bentley, as well as many loving relatives and friends.

John was a 1942 graduate of Knoxville Catholic High School and honorably served his country during WW II and the Korean War with the US Navy. He was retired from TVA and the Rohm & Haas Company in Knoxville, TN. John was well known among his friends and relatives as staunch American who loved his republic and respected the Constitution and Bill of Rights of this country. He believed that the First and all other amendments could only exist as long as the Second amendment was in place to protect them. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed working with his horses and chickens on his farm. He won many ribbons and prizes at local fairs displaying his animals and prize poultry.

A special note of Thanks for the love, patience, and support of his daughter as well as Pat and Ann Ledford and the crew at Standard Electric, and the staff of Tennova Residential Hospice in Halls.

Calling hours are at Stevens Mortuary, 1304 Oglewood Ave, Knoxville, TN from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. The Holy Rosary will be recited immediately following calling hours. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Ghost Church 1041 North Central Street, Knoxville, TN at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday with Reverend Monsignor Xavier Mankel officiating. Interment will follow at the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 5901 Lyons View Pike, Knoxville, TN. Pallbearers: Jim Bentley, Tom Bentley, Jr., Mark Bentley, Pat Ledford, Ed Cloud, and Bob Gurganus.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to your local VFW chapter, the Wounded Warriors Project, the Ladies of Charity at Holy Ghost Church, or a charity of choice.
