Obituary

Barbara Jean Popejoy Ray, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Physician's Regional Medical Center. She was a graduate of Central High School and active in their class reunions . She also attended the University of Tennessee. She was employed by the Knoxville Police Department and was retired from Norfolk- Southern Railroad. She was a long time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for many years and held several administrative positions there. She was named 2007 Fountain City Woman of the Year, was active in the Republican Party, Fountain City Ministry Center, Fountain City Town Hall and was appointed by the City Mayor to serve on the Board of Equalization. She was the originator of Fountain City Day held each Memorial Day. Barbara was a loving friend to many who loved and adored her.

Preceded in death by parents, William Albert and Lucille Standifer Popejoy.

Survivors: cousins, Carolyn Popejoy Hartsell and husband Ron and Torrence Popejoy.

Her celebration of life service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Sarah Varnell officiating. Family and friends will meet 3:15 p.m. following the service at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 3:30 p.m. committal service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Fountain City Ministry Center, P.O. Box 5311, Knoxville, TN 37928 or St. Paul United Methodist Church, 4014 Garden Drive, Knoxville, TN 37918. Serving the family, Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway.
