Thompson, Ruth Anna Russell of Corryton (born Jan. 19, 1921) passed away early Sunday morning, December 16 at NHC Healthcare. She was retired from The Knoxville News Sentinel. She was a member of Washington Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder, Sunday School secretary, treasurer and teacher. As a member of the Knoxville Women's Bowling Association she served on the Board of Directors. She was elected to the Clara B. Morton (Bowling) Hall of Fame and served as President of the Knoxville 600 Bowling Club. A graduate of North Texas State University, she was a member of Delta Psi Kappa fraternity (folo) and served in the Navy Medical Corps in World War II.
Preceded in death by parents Permon Dewitt Russell and Blanche Revier Russell of Irving, Texas, she is survived by daughter and son-in-law Frances Thompson and Eric Shafferman, granddaughters Rachel McGill and Shelly McGill, Rachel's fiancé Isaac Daniels, "other daughters" Rada Rolison and Doris Simpson as well as cousins in Texas, Arkansas, California and Mexico.
Receiving of friends will be on Tuesday, December 18 from 5pm - 7pm at Stevens Mortuary. A celebration of life will be held at Washington Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 19 with a short service at 2pm followed by beverages and desserts. Memorial donations may be made to Washington Presbyterian Church, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Knoxville Area Rescue Mission, or the National Bowling Hall of Fame.
