ROBERT "BOB" DERYL BUTLER - age 89, of Knoxville, made a peaceful transition from this earth on December 7, 2015.
A native of Cocke County, Bob attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
He served in the US Army in Europe during World War II, and he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Bob was an electrician and a proud member of IBEW Local #760 for over 60 years. He was also a competitive checker player. Bob won many local and state tournaments over the years, and he was the National Champion in the Majors Division in 1972. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bon Butler; and wife of 64 years, Dorothy Owenby Headrick Butler.
Survivors: children, Dennis (Linda) Headrick, Karen (Con) Hunley, Suzanne Butler-Baumgardner (Keith); and granddaughter, Brittany Hunley.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Ben Atchley State Veterans Home, and at Smoky Mountain Hospice for their loving, compassionate, and professional care.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway.
The family and friends will meet 9:45 a.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery for a graveside service and interment at 10:00 a.m., Chaplain A.D. Baxter officiating.
Military Honors will be performed by the Tennessee Army National Guard, and East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard.
