Rev. Odis Burl Cavin—age 88 of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017. He was founding pastor of Emmanuel Assembly of God, as well as a metallurgist, retired from ORNL. Burl graduated from LMU and received his Master’s in Engineering from UT. He taught at Thomas Walker High School in Lee County, VA for many years. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Teen Challenge of Knoxville. Burl’s Friday night family dinners were enjoyed by family and friends for 40 years and will be missed.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Mabel Smith Cavin, his parents, 4 sisters, and 1 brother.
He is survived by daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Hinkle; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ruth and David Faulkner; son and daughter-in-law, David and Kay Cavin; grandchildren Brittanie (Aaron), Jarrod, Nathan (Emma), Elijah, Madison, Benjamin, Victoria, Josiah, Jonathan, Jedediah and Audrianna; great grandchildren, Rebekah and Quentin; several nieces and nephews, and extended church family.
Family and friends will meet 9:45 a.m. Friday, July 28, 2017, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens for a 10 a.m. graveside service and interment. Pallbearers will be Aaron Gilliland, Jarrod Hinkle, Nathan Faulkner, Elijah Cavin, Josiah Hinkle, and Jonathan Horner.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Stevens Mortuary. A funeral service will follow with Rev. Dan Webb, Rev. James Biddle, and Rev. John Wiseman officiating. Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway, is serving the Cavin family.
