Ralph H. Mertz age 100, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Ben Atchley State Veterans Home. He was a member and elder at First Lutheran Church for over 60 years. Ralph was a retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army serving in WWII and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
Preceded in death by parents, Edward J. and Lillian Mertz; brothers, Lloyd Mertz, Lester Mertz and Robert Mertz.
Survivors: wife of 73 years, Dorothy Mertz, sons and daughters-in-law, Keith R. and Janie Mertz, David A. and Linda E. Mertz; daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Richard P. Jones; grandson and wife, Christopher A. and Cristin Mertz; granddaughter and husband, Emily L. and Josh Stephens; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Anniston, Sydney, Keeton, Levi and Paisley.
Family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Stevens Mortuary followed by a 7:00 p.m. memorial service with Pastor Floyd Smithey officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11:15 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2018 at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on John Sevier HWY for an 11:30 a.m. inurnment service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, 1207 Broadway, Knoxville, TN 37917.
