BYRD, MARY PEARL MACE – of Spruce Pine, NC, died May 22, 2013 at Tennova Residential Hospice in Knoxville, TN following complications from Alzheimers. She was 91.
Mrs. Byrd was born August 26, 1921, the daughter of the late Jeter Carl Mace and Annie Cardia Mace. Mrs. Byrd resided most of her life in her beloved hometown of Spruce Pine, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles Larry Byrd; sisters, Wilma Mace Burnett and Ruby Mace; and grandson, Stephen "Donnie" Wallace.
Mrs. Byrd is survived by her brother, Bill Mace and wife Mary of Lenoir City, TN; her children, Carole Byrd Davis and husband Bob of Knoxville, TN and Ed Byrd and wife Polly of Hickory, NC; grandchildren, Wendy Wallace Butler and husband Steve of Chattanooga, TN; Jeni Wallace Stevens and husband Saul of Knoxville, TN; Annie Byrd Hamnett and husband Matt of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Rusty Byrd and wife Nell of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Mrs. Byrd had 7 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pearl, Larry, Carole and Ed lived in Spruce Pine where she was active in Liberty Hill Baptist Church. She loved her church family and spent much of her time with them. Pearl loved entertaining her family and friends, she was known for her kindness, sense of humor, and wonderful meals. Her dinners always included home grown vegetables and delicious desserts. Pearl and her friends made many quilts for family and neighbors.
She and her husband owned Crabtree General Store for many years. After retirement they started Byrd Tree Farm. Christmas season was very busy and enjoyable at their farm.
Upon moving to Knoxville in 2007, Pearl was a resident at Windsor Garden Assisted Living. Her family would like to thank the staff for their love and wonderful care. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Hill Baptist Church, 241 Hoot Owl Road, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m. with Reverend Ricky Ray officiating. Interment will immediately follow at the church cemetery.
