Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Pope Sanders, 93, passed away March 31, 2018, at her home. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville and former member of Inskip Baptist Church where her husband served as pastor. She was a retired teacher, having taught many years at Shannondale Elementary School. Always cheerful and eternally optimistic, she lived her life with courage, strong faith, and enthusiasm.

Preceded in death by her husband Rev. Robert A. Sanders, pastor of Inskip Baptist Church, 1963-1983, her daughter Mary Pope Sanders, and her parents Dr. and Mrs. Charles W. Pope. Dr. Pope was pastor of First Baptist Church, Jefferson City, where Mary Elizabeth grew up. Later, the family moved to Nashville, where Dr. Pope served as Executive Secretary of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, 1942-1956. Also preceded in death by brothers Maurice, Hughlan (Ruby), Stanley (Virginia), and sister Virginia Jean (Wilburn).

Survived by son Charles (Royce Ann), grandson Robert, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, at Stevens Mortuary, followed by the chapel service at 7:00 p.m. with Mrs. Sanders’ nephew, Rev. Charles M. Pope, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, St. Albans, WV officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10:45 a.m. Friday, April 6, at Highland Memorial Park, Sutherland Avenue, for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service and interment
