Allen, Kenneth Jack—age 91 of Knoxville, passed away on October 17, 2012 in his home that he built in 1952. He was a charter member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. A decorated soldier in WWII, he served in the US Army's 10th Mountain Division in Italy receiving 2 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, and 3 campaign medals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vontella; parents, Tom and Geneva; and son, Jerry.
Survived by daughter, Tina Laman and husband Dr. Craig Laman; sons, Kenneth Jack, Jr. and Dr. Thomas G. Allen and wife Dr. Janet Allen; grandchildren, Kevin, Brent, Drew, Brad, Anne, Jean, and Kenneth III; sister, Mildred Walker; and special caregiver, Kathy Munsey.
He retired from ALCOA after 42 years. He is a graduate of Carter High School where he played basketball. He was devoted to his family, church and friends. He was there for all of us when we needed him. He was an especially loving grandfather. He coached youth baseball, football, and basketball. He played softball until he was 59, and stopped only because his son and son-in-law were no longer on the team. He was an avid supporter of UT sports, attending every home game at Thompson-Boling Arena from opening night until 2010 except for one game when he was at the Fiesta Bowl for the football team. He had a similar attendance record at Neyland Stadium.
The family will receive friends 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Stevens Mortuary. The funeral service will follow at 6:30 p.m. with Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Graveside services at Asbury Cemetery 12:30 p.m. Sunday with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3839 Buffet Mill Road, Knoxville 37917.
