HUBERT ELMER (HOBY) OWNBY - of Corryton, Tennessee, entered his eternal home, Monday morning, January 2, 2017.
He was born August 17, 1918, to Rev. Fred Walter Ownby and Sophia Orlena Whaley Ownby in Greenbrier, Tennessee, (which is now part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park). Hubert was a World War II veteran. He served his country honorably as a Cpl T-5 in the United States Army, A Battery, Field Artillery, 95th Division. He fought in England, France, Germany, Belgium, and Metz. He retired from Standard Knitting Mills as a machinist with 47 years of service.
Hubert was married to the "love of his life", Pauline (Polly) Norton. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary December 27, 2016. Hubert was a faithful and devoted member of Corryton Baptist Church where he sang in the CBC Choir, served as a Deacon, and taught the Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Orlena Whaley Ownby; six sisters, Ruth and Bessie Ownby, Ada (Cletis) Wolfenbarger, Wilma (Harry) Davis, Edith (Ted) Reed, and Margie (Huber) Rhodes.
Survivors: wife of 64 years, Polly Norton Ownby; brother, Ralph Joel Ownby, Sr.; sisters, Naomi Farmer, Mattie Drew, and Bobbie Underwood; also many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family expresses special gratitude to Sandra Stabnow and Peggy Leonard, the two wonderful care givers who came to the home daily to care for Hoby. We wish to express our thanks as well, to Tennova Residential Hospice for the wonderful care and comfort provided to our loved one.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4th at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. Damon Patterson officiating. The family and friends will meet 10:45 a.m. Thursday, January 5th at Highland Memorial Park for a graveside service and interment at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Rocky Ramsey officiating
