Tipton, Mary Helen Jones (Mamis) age 90, of Knoxville, born September 13, 1921 in Lenior City and died peacefully at NHC Fort Sanders on Friday, May 11, 2012. She will be remembered for her feistiness and her "natural" black hair. She deeply loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband, Rolla Lewis Tipton. They were married on April 22, 1942. When Lewis joined the Army, Mary stepped-up to work as a security guard at Oak Ridge on the Manhattan District Project. She loved to work in her yard as evidenced by her flowers and shrubs. Also preceded in death by father, James B. Jones; precious mother, Isabelle Tate Rogers; step-father, Jess Rogers; brothers, R.B. Jones and Roy Jones; sisters, Marie Malone Bass, Edna Rogers and Jean Thornburg.
Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dick Creswell; son and daughter-in-law, David and Barbara Tipton; grandchildren, Roddy Creswell, Scott (Tammy) Creswell, Nikki (Matt) Sprinkle, Michael and Nikki Tipton; great-grandchildren, Kaytlynn Dee Creswell, Elijah Jack Sprinkle, Annabelle Lily Sprinkle; sister, Carrie (Paul) Shelton; nieces and nephews, Hershel Rogers, Don Thornburg, Joyce Justus, Kenneth Rogers, Betty Daniels; 2 very special nieces, Barbara Sue Luttrell and Jeri Brown.
Family and friends will meet 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery for a 1:00 p.m. graveside service and interment with Dr. Jack Parrott officiating. Family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway.
