GEORGE ORBIE STEELE - age 93, of Knoxville, passed away 1:00 a.m. Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Tennova North Knoxville Medical Center.
He was a member of Inskip Baptist Church, Bright Hope Lodge #557 F & AM, and Fountain City Chapter #169 OES. He was a World War II US Navy veteran. During the dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, George served as a guard for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. On April 14, 2015, George was able to go with HonorAir to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial.
Preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Carolyn Steele; son, George Rudy Steele; granddaughter, Tamara Lyn Jenkins; parents, J.P. and Bessie Burnett Steele; sisters, Elvia Steele Oliver, Ellen Steele Wills Davis, and Virginia Steele Edwards; and brothers, John L. Steele, and Lincoln B. Steele.
Survivors: wife of 76 years, Lucy Porter Steele of Knoxville; grandchildren, Angelia Jenkins Brooks, Michail Blake Jenkins, and Stefanie Pike; great-grandchildren, Blakely Jenkins, Kinsey Jenkins, Kate Pike, Jon Pike, Jr., and Brianna Brooks; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at their convenience Saturday or the family will receive friends 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday at Stevens Mortuary.
The family and friends will meet 2:45 p.m. Sunday at Highland Memorial Park on Sutherland Avenue for a graveside service and interment at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Mike Segers and L.B. Steele, Jr. officiating. Full military honors will be presented by East Tennessee Veteran Honor Guard. Serving the family, Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway.
