Geneva Newman Underwood, of Knoxville, passed peacefully from this life and into the arms of her Lord on April 30, 2016 at the age of 103. Geneva was born on July 21, 1912 in Dandridge, Tennessee to Tom and Dammie Newman. Geneva's faith was very important to her and she led by example. She was the oldest member of Valley View Baptist Church in Knoxville where she faithfully attended until ill health. She enjoyed her family and, when she was able, enjoyed working in her yard with her fruit trees and flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Charlie (C.E) Underwood; sons, Glen Edward and Phillip Ray Underwood; daughter-in-law, Hazel Underwood; brothers, Joe, Vaughn, Ted and Clyde Newman; sisters, Ella Mae Peters and Gladys Benton; three grandsons, and one great grandson.
Geneva is survived by her son, Lorin (Marjorie) Underwood, son Alvin (Evelyn) Underwood, Daughter, Geraldine (J.W.) Hughes, son Douglas (Wanda) Underwood, daughter-in-law Cynthia Underwood, and sister Ulla (Tottsie) Williams. She was a grandmother to 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was, also, aunt to many special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 3rd from 6-8pm at Stevens Mortuary, with the funeral service following at 8:00 with Rev. Justin Pratt, Pastor of Valley View Baptist Church, officiating the service. The family and friends will meet 10:15 a.m. at the cemetery for a graveside service Wednesday, May 4th at 10:30am at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens. Geneva's grandsons will serve as pallbearers and great-grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Kindred Northhaven Health Care and Rehabilitation for their friendship, love and care during her time there. Each of you went above and beyond by providing excellent care on a daily basis with love and compassion that words cannot describe.
