Obituary

Garner Dalton, age 84, passed away on July 17, 2017 in the comfort of his home surrounded by family and friends. Garner was born and raised in Thorn Hill, Tennessee and was the youngest of ten children. As a teenager, he first laid eyes on the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Dorothy, at music school. After getting married, Garner and Dorothy moved to Carlisle, Ohio, where they worked and started a family. Following his retirement from Cargill in 1995, Garner and Dorothy moved back to Tennessee to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Garner always said that he wanted to be remembered as a man who liked to have fun, and would often say, “no fools, no fun…if it wouldn’t have been for me, there wouldn’t have been none.” He will be remembered for his deep appreciation for agriculture, his singing along and playing the air banjo to bluegrass music, the way he could light up the room with a contagious laugh, smile and one of his many stories, working the doors and greeting members of Central Baptist Church of Fountain City, and his indescribable love for family and friends. Above all else, however, Garner will always be remembered as the portrait of unending love and dedication as a husband and best friend to his wife, who he affectionately called “Ruthie.” Garner was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Dalton, his son, Alan Dalton, his daughter Cheryl Dalton-Norman and husband Mike, his grandchildren, Kyle Norman and wife Alex, Jacob Norman and wife Morgan, Claire Norman and fiancé Michael Newton, honorary grandson, Evan Drummer, and a host of nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbors. Honorary pallbearers are the Moulders Sunday School Class. Pallbearers are Jacob Norman, Kyle Norman, Jonathan McCarter, Evan Drummer, Michael Newton, and Donnie Lawson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Central Baptist Church of Fountain City, 5364 North Broadway, Knoxville, TN 37918, or the Tennessee Tech Wesley Foundation, 271 East 9th Street, Cookeville, TN 38501.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Reverend Ron Mouser and Reverend Dallas Harrell officiating. The family and friends will meet 9:45 a.m. Friday at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a graveside service and interment at 10:00 a.m.
