CASS, GRACE EVELYN GRUBB--94, of Knoxville, (known to family and friends as "Mama Cass"), died Sunday, July 29, 2012 at her home. In her 94 years, she led a full life. She was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in the 1930's. She attended the dedication of the Great Smokies National Park in 1940. And she was one of the few who also attended the re-dedication of the park on the 75th anniversary in 2009. Between those years, she entertained several generations of family and friends with her violin and was affectionately called "Fid" by her husband of 58 years, Daniel Cass. Two of her favorite songs to play were "The Tennessee Waltz" and "Rocky Top." In fact music always played a great part in her life--she sang in the church choir and led many children's choirs through the years. Though she was a devoted wife and mother, she found time to be involved in the community with an active leadership role in PTA, Scouts, Arminda Home Demonstration Club, and Rose Trail Garden Club. She was a cancer survivor since 1977 and volunteered with Reach to Recovery. She was a member of New Life United Methodist Church. Mama Cass was an example of love to everyone who knew her and leaves a proud family and many friends who will miss her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mabel and Chester Grubb; husband, Daniel Cass; sister, Curtisteen Cass; brother, Ralph Grubb; and grandson, Jeremy Cass.
She is survived by her children, Dianne Brown and husband Don; Doug Cass and wife Emily; Danny Cass and wife Alicia; Debbie Webster and husband Joe; David Cass and wife Cyndy; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews near and far away.
