Bates, Eunice RUTH Simpson. B. - born May 15, 1914, aged 96 years, of Corryton, TN, died on Sunday, February 27, 2011. Long time member and children's Sunday School teacher of Corryton Baptist Church, Mrs. Bates touched the lives of many children through the church and community.
Preceded in death by husband of 53 years, Clarence Bates; parents, Walter and Cora Ezell Simpson; and ten brothers and sisters.
Survived by brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Dot Simpson of Sevierville. Survived by her devoted children and in-laws, daughter, Barbara Esther Kinder and husband Harold of Knoxville; sons, Bryce Bates and wife Alice of Durham, NC, and David Bates of Corryton. Also survived by granddaughters and their spouses, Susan and Francis Gordon of Halls, Julie Kinder of Knoxville, Angela and Gene Webb of Corryton, and Sandra and Donnie Peters of Corryton; grandsons and spouses, Walter Lynn and Mary Bates of Corryton, Bill and Julie Bates of Asheboro, NC and Jay and Darleen Bates of Durham, NC; great grandchildren, Joseph and Thomas Bates, Christopher Bates, Diana and Stephen Gordon, Tyler Mize, Kallie and Luke Webb, Michael, Megan, and Samantha Peters; and great-great-grandson, Avery Mullins; many special nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express thanks to the nurses of Nine East UT Hospital, and the doctors of UT Hospitalists for the care and concern given to Mrs. Bates.
As a reminder of her devotion to children, Miss Ruth had requested that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to St. Jude's, Scottish Rite Temple, or East TN Children's Hospital.
Family and friends will meet 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, for a 2:00 p.m. graveside service and interment. Dr. Damon Patterson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 Tuesday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at N. Broadway.
