Cotteena Joan Doyle, "Teena" age 100, was born on May 24, 1915 in Dandridge, Tennessee and died on January 22, 2016, soon after being diagnosed with acute AML leukemia. She is now in the presence of our sovereign God for eternity. She joined Washington Pike United Methodist Church in 1953 and was a member of the Christian Fidelis Sunday School Class. She remained active until late 2015.
Mrs. Doyle attended Old Knoxville High School. She enjoyed being honored as one of the oldest graduates in attendance at the centennial celebration held in 2010 at the Historic Tennessee Theatre. She married the love of her life, Homer Doyle, in 1935 and they were blessed to have 58 years together. Her primary roles were those of wife as well as mother to daughter, Becky. Over the years many pleasant hours were spent with friends and family at the cabin at Sequoyah Landing on Norris Lake. She also enjoyed the annual Decoration at Lawson's Chapel United Methodist Church in Dandridge, TN. Family and friends gathered on May 24th of last year at Marshall Field Manor in Heiskell, TN to celebrate her 100th birthday. The occasion was filled with much joy and fun and included a special birthday cake made by long-time friend, Alice Yu. The attendees are left with precious memories of that day. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, gardener, and knitter. She enjoyed UT sports and watching golf. She loved the beach but the highlight of her travels was visiting her daughter who lived in Paris, France for a year. They attended Easter Mass at Notre Dame Cathedral, heard Pavarotti sing at the Opera House, and attended a Christian Dior fashion show. More importantly, she was a selfless caregiver who, for years, took care of her mother and brother. Later, she cared for her husband for approximately 17 years when he was diagnosed with a devastatingly debilitating neurological disease.
She was preceded in death by parents, Dovie and Albert Rollins, brother, Edgar Rollins, nephew, Eddie Rollins, and husband, Homer Doyle. Giving thanks to God for a long life well-lived are surviving members of Mrs. Doyle's family: daughter, Becky Doyle, numerous friends, cousins, nephews, nieces, special cousin who was like a sister, Mildred Hickman, and special caregivers, the Kyle Vandergriff family.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway. A funeral service will follow at 7:30 p.m. with Dr. James Bailes officiating. The family and friends will meet 12:45 p.m. Friday at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a graveside service and interment at 1:00 p.m.
