Billie Hurst - age 90, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2018
At his home.
He was a member of Black Oak Ridge Baptist Church since 1933, serving as Deacon, song leader and Sunday School Teacher. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a 60 year member of Bright Hope Lodge #557 Free & Accepted Masons. He was also a 36 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was retired as manager of the Plumbing Department of Modern Supply, a US Navy veteran of the Korean War serving as a gunner’s mate, and Powell High School Class of ’47 valedictorian.
His favorite pastimes were woodworking, gardening, and raising flowers.
He was a friend to all, loved by all, and a Jack of all trades. He was widely known as a plumbing consultant for east Tennessee and is currently seen on the Heartland Series along with his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents, David Newton and Minnie Annie Hurst; brothers, Buddy Boy and Albert Hurst; special son, J. Stanley Hackworth; and special granddaughter, Tandy Lynn Hurst.
Survivors: wife of 42 years, Opal Acuff Hurst; daughters, Jannine (Hurst) Sivley, Patricia McCarter, Royce Pratt (R.G.), and Rena Clayton (Steve); son, Michael R. Hurst (Sue); 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ruth Majors; and brother, Lloyd Hurst.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway followed by a Masonic service at 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow the Masonic service with Reverend John Holland, Reverend Gary Capps, and Reverend Toby Everett officiating.
Friends will meet 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens (Claxton) for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service and interment. Pallbearers: Clint Pratt, Steve Clayton, Greg Gentry, R.G. Pratt, James Hurst, and J.R. Burbage.
