Betty Jean Anderson Patterson McWhirter, “Tuffy”, through God’s grace, went safely into the awaiting arms of her Lord, early Saturday afternoon. She was surrounded by her family who cherished her. Betty was a gentle and kind soul, who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was always generous with her easy smile and warm heart, ready and willing to love anyone around her. She was known to those closest to her as “Tuffy”, because of her strong spirit and unfailing determination.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Amy Anderson; and her loving husband of 54 years, Donald Quentin Patterson.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of 16 years, Burl McWhirter; son, Jimmy Patterson and his wife Dyan of Charleston, SC; daughter, Amy Patterson Cross and her husband Bob of Knoxville, TN; son, Mark Patterson and his wife Juliane of Germany. She was adored by her grandchildren, Tricia Griffin, Kristi Turner, Annie Patterson, Jonathan Harris, Matthew Cross, Matthew, Nick, Louisa, and Amelia Patterson; 7 great-grandchildren. She also leaves 2 sisters, Kathleen Arp and Charlotte Monroe; and several special nieces and nephews. In addition, she leaves to mourn her absence, Burl’s family, who loved her as their own.
She was a lifelong member of Lincoln Park Baptist Church, and she lived her faith as a child of God each day, even until the very end.
Visitation will be held at Stevens Mortuary from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday followed by a celebration of her full and joyful life at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. James E. Robertson officiating. Family and friends may meet 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery for a 10:00 a.m. graveside service and interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lincoln Park Baptist Church.
